5 Signs Your Switchboard Needs UpgradingYour switchboard is the control centre for every circuit in your home. Many older Brisbane homes still run on outdated boards that weren't built for today's number of appliances, air conditioners and safety standards. Here's what to look out for.
1. Your safety switch keeps tripping Occasional trips can be normal, but frequent trips usually point to an overloaded circuit or an ageing board struggling to keep up.
2. You still have a ceramic fuse box If your switchboard uses old rewireable ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers, it likely predates modern safety switch requirements.
3. No safety switches (RCDs) at all Modern QLD homes are required to have safety switches on power and lighting circuits. If yours doesn't, it's overdue for an upgrade.
4. Lights flicker when appliances turn on This can indicate the board is under strain from the home's total electrical load, especially in homes that have added air conditioning or an EV charger without a corresponding upgrade.
5. You're planning a renovation or adding a big appliance Adding a ducted air conditioning system, EV charger, or pool equipment is a common trigger for switchboard upgrades — it's worth checking capacity before, not after, the new load goes in.
